25th Batch of the Season!

The idea of feeding our family and community year-round with delicious, healthful preserves that celebrate the bounty from our non-certified organic farm and our neighbours’ farms totally excites me.  This is what drives me to be a #maker and a #farmer, coming up with new and exciting gastronomical experiments every week to preserve the most delicious jams, jellies, sauces, relishes, chutneys, and pickles.

This year, with an 18-month old and another baby on the way, I set the goal 8 weeks ago to make at least one batch of preserves a week, and so far I’ve exceeded that goal, now on the 25th variety of preserves of the year! We’re now working on expanding to create a commercial kitchen so we can share the preserved harvest at markets all over the province.

These are not your grandma’s preserves…  Ok, well maybe some are my great-grandma’s preserves!  My father’s maternal grandmother left us with her hand-scribbled book of recipes from the 1940s-50s, and this week I’m making her prized relish, known in the family as “Millie’s relish”, with tomatoes, peaches, pears, and apples, along with her recipe for clove-infused pickled green tomatoes.

The culinary possibilities are endless!  Strawberry basil, raspberry amaretto, and blueberry-vanilla-whiskey jams, a lemon-rhubarb-amaretto marmalade inspired by an amaretto sour, pickled daikon and radish with ginger, spicy baby patty pan squash pickles, pineapple mint sauce, spiced crabapple butter, dilly beans, garlic scape and basil microgreens pesto, queen anne’s lace and litchi liqueur jelly, tangy coleslaw, and so much more… Be sure to check out our website (www.hawkridgehomestead.com) for the full menu of tastebud-awakening options.

Here at Hawkridge Homestead we also raise non-certified organic pork and make our own gluten-free sausages from scratch, and are experimenting this year with our own smoked honey hams and maple bacon recipes.

Thanks, @CreemoreSprings, for considering us for your #CreateMoreFund Contest!
